In August of 2019 I conducted my first mother-daughter photo shoot.
They were coming to New York City to see a Broadway show and wanted a few images of them together around the city. They weren't interested in "touristy" photos. This was a plus; it meant that I didn't have to compete with crowds in order to get certain shots. I still wanted to make sure that people looking at the photos could still get that "New York City vibe" by looking at them.
With that in mind, I chose a few locations in and around the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It's a neighborhood that has loads of street art, along with cool stores and other local businesses. It's also less of a tourist destination than other parts of Manhattan, so crowds wouldn't be a factor. We met around 9:30 in the morning. We spent the next few hours walking, talking, laughing, and yes, taking photos.
It was a nerve-wracking yet fun experience! It helped that the one of the two that I was shooting was someone I knew. It was also a plus for me was that their daughter--clearly someone who grew up with photo apps like Instagram--knew how to pose for the camera without any instruction from me!
One of the joys of this shoot was seeing how affectionate the two were with each other. They clearly have a strong bond. I was honored to have a part in capturing that with my camera.
After the photo shoot we walked over to Gelso and Grand, a restaurant in the Little Italy section of Manhattan, and had a delicious meal.
I really enjoyed spending time with my clients. While it was a lot of work, it was worth it. I got to take photos that people enjoyed. I also got to reconnect with the city that I love in a new way.
