"Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble." ~ Representative John Lewis

In the first weekend of January 2020 I attended various protest marches around New York City. I wanted to include myself as one of thousands that came to make their voices heard. I also came with my camera. It was my way of bearing witness to this critical moment in history. I recorded anger, frustration, as well as solidarity and compassion.

Participating in aling with capturing these events was intense. The photo below, for example, made me cry.

I noticed this little girl and her mother along with the other rally-goers. She was such a cutie! I asked her mom if I could take a photo and she said yes. I took a few, thanked them, and moved on. I had a feeling it was going to be a special image. So when I got home it was the first I pulled up for editing. As soon as I looked at it the tears started.

This little girl had such an open expression of innocence on her face. That she was participating in a march formed to prevent bloodshed and violence hit me hard.

This next image is also from the same ant-war rally. It took a couple of tries before I got a photo I was happy with.

It was a challenge to get both the sign as well as the protesters in the frame. Also, to have the signs visible enough so the viewer could get a sense of what was going on. Otherwise, it would've just looked like a typical scene in Times Square, crowded with people. This image uses size and color to create a mood. The large corporate logo in bright red, suspended above the protesters in their dark colored clothes, builds tension between the two.

Fun fact: I used to work at this very Disney store. It's an experience I'll never forget, for a variety of reasons.

It's my hope that justice and peace will come for all those being harmed by cruel individuals and institutions, whether here or around the world. It's also my hope that people will continue to fight for those that they love.

There is space for us all, there is enough for us all.
